DOHA,
February 10, 2010 –Salman Ahmed/ In the light of ongoing
celebrations of Doha, capital of Arab culture, the Qatar Olympic
Committee and the Qatar Museum Authority raised curtains Tuesday
on the inaugural Seminar on Horse Sports at the Museum of
Islamic Arts.
Mr. Khalid Al Jowhar from Qatar Museum Authority welcomed the
attendees on behalf of Dr. Abdulla Al Najjar, CEO of QMA and
Rashid Al Mansouri, President of Qatar Equestrian Federation.
Prof. Wolfgang Decker of Germany briefed on Horse and Chariot in
Ancient Egypt, Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Yildiran & Dr. Osman Tolga
Sinoforoglu both of Turkey spoke about the Revival of the Jereed
Game in Turkey. Cynthia Culbertson (USA) reviewed the Horse
racing in the Arab world. Judith Forbis of USA outlined the
Royal Family and the Horse Tradition I and Ali Ismael Al Baker
of Qatar spoke about Royal Family and the Horse Tradition II.
The
seminar is the first of its kind witnessing world-renowned
specialists to speak and discuss the history and evolution of
horse sports.
The seminar will cover many themes related to horse sports and
games. From a historical perspective, lectures will highlight
the significance of horse games and their evolution in the
region and around the world. The key speakers will focus on
specific horse sports such as Polo, Jereed and Fantasia
demonstrating their origins and current-day popularity.
Another theme of the seminar is horse racing and its impact on
societies in the Arab World and other regions. The lectures are
enriched with images and short films.
The
seminar is co-organised by the Qatar Museums Authority, Qatar
Olympic and Sports Museum, Qatar Equestrian Federation and Al
Shaqab stud.
As specified on the seminar’s Wednesday schedule, number of
specialists will discuss several topics on horse sports
including : Prof. Dr. Nigel B. Crowther (Canada) will speak
about Equestrian Events in Ancient Greece and Rome, Dr.
Christian Wacker (Qatar) will review the Organization of the
Equestrian Games in Ancient Olympia, Dr. Werner Petermandl
(Austria) will outline the history of Equestrian Games in
Ancient Olympia, and Prof. Dr. Ingomar Weiler (Austria) will
highlight the Horse sportsmen and Stable Owners in Antiquity.
